The hot drinks market is facing falling volume sales as younger consumer segments, in particular, are opting to consume hot drinks less frequently in key categories, particularly coffee. However, value sales remain positive as, while consuming less in terms of quantity, many consumers are proving willing to pay more for their hot drink purchases.
The rise in consumer health consciousness and the expansion of ethical consumption are creating opportunities for development within hot drinks. While mass coffee, tea and chocolate-flavoured powder drinks are all declining, areas such as fresh coffee beans, functional tea and premium chocolate drinks are seeing positive developments as they attract the attention of health conscious and ethically focused consumers, particularly in younger demographics.
Hot drinks in Denmark continued to be characterised by major players such as Merrild Kaffe A/S, BKI Foods A/S and Jacobs Douwe Egberts DK Aps, which jointly accounted for over half of market sales in both volume and value terms in 2023. The leading players increased their combined market share during the year largely due to strong brand recognition, wide retail distribution and continued product innovation and new product launches.
Online sales of groceries in Denmark faced some setbacks, such as major retailer, Coop, discontinuing its online store, in 2023. However, for coffee sales, there are some well-functioning online stores in place beyond the major retail chains.
While retail volume sales of hot drinks fell in 2023, foodservice volumes increased. This trend was in line with overall foodservice sales growing as Danish consumers were eager to spend time outside their homes after the COVID-19 crisis.
Hot drinks is expected to see moderate decline in retail volume sales across categories in the forecast period. There will be declines in mass volumes, while well-positioned premium and organic products still offer good growth potential.
