During 2024, retail volume sales of hot drinks expanded, supported by urbanisation, population growth, and continued recovery of the economy since the end of the pandemic. However, the market now faces a new set of challenges due to global inflation rates and fuel price hikes as well as a lack of dynamic marketing strategies.
The hot drinks market in the country is experiencing moderate growth There is increasing demand for both retail and foodservice consumption thanks to government activities as the Ivory Coast is a producer of cacao and coffee beans. Many companies involved in the cultivation of coffee and tea have also now moved into the transformation of coffee and tea to the finished product.
The quantity of imported beverages, such as tea and coffee, decreased by 5% in 2024 which enabled local brands to gain share as consumers sought out cheaper alternatives given the level of inflation in the country. However, cocoa and coffee bean production decreased in 2024, causing local hot drinks producers to struggle with sourcing ingredients, a situation which led to higher prices.
The Ivorian economy is largely informal, accounting for an estimated 30 to 40% of GDP. A significant portion of hot drinks consumption occurs at coffee kiosks or from street vendors.
Much of the country’s infrastructure has benefited from improvement or indeed construction, notably the Abidjan-San Pedro axis, two economic hubs of the country, which have been completely renovated. However, despite major improvements in recent years, many parts of the country’s road network are still underdeveloped, which can present challenges for companies seeking to distribute goods to some parts of the country.
Over the forecast period, the hot drinks market will continue to grow, despite strong competition from local alternatives commonly consumed at breakfast, such as galettes or attiéké. These choices are often economically motivated, especially in popular neighbourhoods.
