In 2023, while retail value growth was positive in hot drinks, boosted by high price points, retail volume declined for the third consecutive year. Economic uncertainty continued to shape purchasing decisions, with consumers readjusting their budgets in line with declining disposable incomes.
An ongoing trend in hot drinks sees standard fresh grounded coffee losing share to coffee beans and coffee pods. This is driven by the rising interest in barista-style coffees in the home, with continued acquisition of coffee machines that use coffee brands and coffee pods.
The leading players in hot drink continued to be Jacobs Douwe Egberts LT UAB in 2023, followed by Paulig Baltic AS and Daisena UAB. All three leading players have a strong presence within the most popular hot drink category, coffee.
Following a solid uplift in share during the outbreak of COVID-19, driven by home seclusion and social distancing, e-commerce recorded a slight growth in Lithuania in 2023. Leading retailers, such as Maxima, Rimi, IKI and Lidl, control the majority of online grocery retailing.
Foodservice recorded a stronger performance than retail in 2023, with on-trade sales benefiting from the full lifting of COVID-19 restrictions. Having had limitations in the past years, consumers were keen to return to the on-trade, investing in previously restricted experiences.
Hot drinks volume sales are set to struggle across the forecast period, with coffee and tea set to record an ongoing decline. There will be a further shift from standard ground fresh coffee to automated alternatives, leading fresh ground coffee beans and pods to drive the highest levels of volume growth.
