Over 2023, retail volume sales of hot drinks are projected to grow moderately, following a strong drop in 2022. Coffee was especially negatively affected in 2022 due to unit price increases.
A key trend in all categories of hot drinks was the consumption trend of quality over volume. In coffee, this was reflected in the migration from standard fresh ground coffee to fresh coffee beans.
Due to their leadership of the dominant category, coffee, the top three players in hot drinks, Nestlé Sverige AB, Jacobs Douwe Egberts SE AB, and Arvid Nordquist HAB, are projected to account for close to two thirds of retail value sales at the end of the review period. These players continued to benefit from strong brand portfolios and recognition and wide retail distribution, while they remain keen to invest in new product developments, marketing and consumer engagement.
Discounters and retail e-commerce are projected to grow their off-trade volume and value shares of hot drinks over 2023 as a whole. The ongoing economic insecurity in the country, exacerbated by the effects of high inflation on costs and prices, fostered a shift to discounters in search of better deals in 2023.
Hot drinks has seen a shift back towards the foodservice channel as the threat of COVID-19 and related restrictions eased and lifted. However, on- and off-trade volume sales of hot drinks are projected to grow at the same level over 2023.
Overall, retail volume sales of hot drinks are set to decline over the forecast period, as consumers focus on quality over volume. Meanwhile, on-trade volume sales of coffee and tea are projected to grow as consumers fully resume pre-pandemic lifestyles and prioritise quality products and experiences.
