Sales of hot drinks were significantly impacted by Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 with sales plummeting as large numbers of people fled the country in search of safety. With Russia’s war continuing in 2023 the population remained significantly smaller although as people started to adjust to the wartime conditions sales of hot drinks started to stabilise.
After a sharp drop in sales in 2022 sales of hot drinks witnessed a more moderate decline in 2023 in retail volume terms. The partial recovery of the foodservice channel negatively impacted retail sales of hot drinks in 2023, while most of the people that left country due to safety issues remained abroad (approximately 20% of the population) with Russia continuing its war.
Jacobs Ukraina PJSC remained the overall leader in hot drinks in 2023, largely thanks to the enduring popularity of its Jacobs brand of coffee. Nonetheless, the company suffered heavy losses in 2022 as its local factory in Trostyanets in the Sumy region was occupied and damaged by Russian forces in February-March 2022, although it subsequently reopened in June 2022.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine led to some consumers temporarily switching back to shopping for hot drinks in traditional trade channels such as small local grocers. These independent retailers were able to be more flexible during periods when the electricity supply was switched off and during air attacks, while retail chains needed more time to adapt to the new reality.
Foodservice sales of hot drinks suffered heavy losses in 2020 following the outbreak of COVID-19. This was followed by a partial recovery 2021 as Ukraine eased its restrictions and consumers began to return to their old lifestyles and consumption habits.
During forecast period it is anticipated that hot drinks will see a steady recovery in retail volume terms, driven by various factors. First it is expected that some people will start to return, while Ukraine is also predicted to regain some of its lost territories.
