Coffee continues to dominate hot drinks in Costa Rica, with the country being a major producer and exporter of the commodity. Consumers are accustomed to purchasing locally produced coffee that is of a certain quality.
There has been little change in the competitive landscape over the review period. Café 1820 from Cía Numar SA continues to lead the coffee category in retail volume and value share.
Consumers continue to shop for hot drinks at larger retail chains, such as Walmart and Más x Menos, as well as supermarkets and hypermarkets and retail outlets in the traditional channel. Higher prices have driven more consumers towards discounters for purchasing hot drinks over the review period, to the benefit of outlets such as Maxi Palí and Palí.
Foodservice sales of hot drinks have witnessed a strong performance since the reopening of establishments and recovery in the tourism sector.
