Full-service restaurants is projected to see current value growth in Portugal over the forecast period, but at a slower rate than over the review period. While high inflation and interest rates impacted the category’s performance in 2024, the economic forecast for the coming years is robust.
Within a highly fragmented category led by small family-owned business, eat-in is likely to continue to dominate consumers’ preferences over the coming years. Nonetheless, demand for increased convenience and speed are likely to boost takeaway and delivery services, which are expected to become increasingly relevant over the forecast period.
The competitive environment is set to remain challenging over the forecast period, as players face changing consumption patterns and strong competition from other categories. To remain competitive, players need to be able to adapt and innovate, focusing on simple and differentiated concepts to attract customers and boost consumer awareness.

Full-Service Restaurants
FSR (full-service restaurants) encompasses all sit-down establishments where the focus is on food rather than on drink. FSR is characterized by table service and a relatively higher quality of food compared to quick-service units. Menus offer multiple selections and may include breakfast, lunch and dinner. Preparation of food products is often complex and involves multiple steps. NOTE: restaurants types catalogued in this segment refer to table-service only (outlets with a proper “full table service:” wait staff attending customers and taking orders at the tables). Outlets with “limited table service” are excluded from FSR. For example: outlets where customers order their food at the counter are excluded (even though the waiter will then bring the food at the table).
