The future for full-service restaurants in the UK is uncertain for a variety of reasons. While outlets, transactions and value sales (at constant 2023 prices) are all set to experience low but positive growth rates over the forecast period, they are predicted to remain below pre-pandemic levels by 2028.
Despite the anticipated difficulties, there are ways in which full-service restaurants could generate growth over the forecast period. These opportunities could include diversifying options for consumers, bringing personalisation and enhancing the customer experience.
Another challenge that full-service restaurants (defined by Euromonitor International as locations where consumers sit down and receive table service) will face over the forecast period is competition from limited-service restaurants and cafés/bars. Limited-service restaurants – classed as establishments offering limited menus with items that can be quickly prepared for eat in or takeaway, and sometimes include table service – are performing strongly.

Full-Service Restaurants
FSR (full-service restaurants) encompasses all sit-down establishments where the focus is on food rather than on drink. FSR is characterized by table service and a relatively higher quality of food compared to quick-service units. Menus offer multiple selections and may include breakfast, lunch and dinner. Preparation of food products is often complex and involves multiple steps. NOTE: restaurants types catalogued in this segment refer to table-service only (outlets with a proper “full table service:” wait staff attending customers and taking orders at the tables). Outlets with “limited table service” are excluded from FSR. For example: outlets where customers order their food at the counter are excluded (even though the waiter will then bring the food at the table).
