For the beginning of the forecast period consumer purchasing power will still be under pressure and this will negatively impact development within full-service restaurants. Reduced disposable incomes and pessimistic sentiment among local consumers will lead to a decline in the number of transactions during the first two years of the forecast period.
Full-service restaurants have few options for dealing effectively with consumers who are more cost conscious due to diminished spending power; however, one solution could be a shift towards more casual dining concepts. Today, the category remains dominated by independent players as chained full-service restaurants is still relatively underdeveloped in the Netherlands.
With full-service restaurants vulnerable to certain negative trends set to persist for at least a part of the forecast period, young entrepreneurs who want to open new outlets within the category are looking for novel ways to attract consumers. The Netherlands has recently seen new restaurants inspired by so-called Japanese listening bars open in some its major Dutch cities.

Full-Service Restaurants
FSR (full-service restaurants) encompasses all sit-down establishments where the focus is on food rather than on drink. FSR is characterized by table service and a relatively higher quality of food compared to quick-service units. Menus offer multiple selections and may include breakfast, lunch and dinner. Preparation of food products is often complex and involves multiple steps. NOTE: restaurants types catalogued in this segment refer to table-service only (outlets with a proper “full table service:” wait staff attending customers and taking orders at the tables). Outlets with “limited table service” are excluded from FSR. For example: outlets where customers order their food at the counter are excluded (even though the waiter will then bring the food at the table).
