In 2023, the local beer market in Indonesia is anticipated to witness substantial growth, bolstered by an increase in international tourism following the reopening of international borders. The Association of Indonesian Beverage Importers and Distributors (APIDMI) has noted a remarkable recovery in the sales volume of imported alcoholic beverages compared to the situation during the pandemic, and primarily fuelled by the uptick in foreign tourist arrivals.
Lager is set to maintain its dominance in the Indonesian beer category for several reasons. Firstly, its widespread popularity among consumers is driven by its generally mild and approachable taste, making it a preferred choice for a broad range of beer drinkers.
The impending presidential elections in 2024 bring with them a sense of economic uncertainty that could potentially affect the beer market in Indonesia. Such political events often lead to cautious consumer spending and a hesitant investment climate, which in turn might influence the dynamics of the beer industry.

Beer
An alcoholic drink usually brewed from malt, sugar, hops and water and fermented with yeast. Some beers are made by fermenting a cereal, especially barley, and therefore not flavoured by hops. Alcohol content for beer is varied – anything up to and over 14% ABV (alcohol by volume), although 3.5% to 5% is most common. Beer is the aggregation of lager, dark beer, stout and non/low alcohol beer.
