In India, although total volume growth is expected for alcoholic drinks in the forecast period, high taxation and regulatory barriers are likely to limit the rates of growth for low ABV (alcohol by volume) categories such as beer. The state-controlled taxation system is inconsistent, with most drinks taxed by volume rather than alcohol content, making beer less accessible than in other countries.
India presents vast potential for beer, as its per capita consumption of 2.15 litres is dwarfed by the Asia Pacific average of 15.
Retail e-commerce has had little impact on the alcoholic drinks industry in India, due to limited development and infrastructure. While some state governments temporarily permitted online alcohol ordering and delivery during the pandemic to maintain social distancing, the approach varied by region.

Beer
An alcoholic drink usually brewed from malt, sugar, hops and water and fermented with yeast. Some beers are made by fermenting a cereal, especially barley, and therefore not flavoured by hops. Alcohol content for beer is varied – anything up to and over 14% ABV (alcohol by volume), although 3.5% to 5% is most common. Beer is the aggregation of lager, dark beer, stout and non/low alcohol beer.
