Government interventions in the alcohol industry in Ireland will shape developments over the forecast period. The Public Health Alcohol Act came into play in 2018, with an aim to address the negative impacts of alcohol consumption on public health grounds (health, society, and economy).
Non/low alcohol beer is expected to maintain its positive trajectory over the forecast period, with on-trade volume sales expected to be notably robust. Non/low alcohol beer in on-trade enables consumers to be sociable and enjoy the taste of beer, but while keeping their actual alcohol consumption levels low.
Premiumisation trends look set to continue over the forecast period, notably in craft beer. An appetite for authenticity is emerging as a key driver of premiumisation, supporting the interest in local brewers in the country – as seen with the popularity of tours and tastings at breweries.

Beer
An alcoholic drink usually brewed from malt, sugar, hops and water and fermented with yeast. Some beers are made by fermenting a cereal, especially barley, and therefore not flavoured by hops. Alcohol content for beer is varied – anything up to and over 14% ABV (alcohol by volume), although 3.5% to 5% is most common. Beer is the aggregation of lager, dark beer, stout and non/low alcohol beer.
