After a difficult year for New Zealand brewers in 2023, the forecast period is expected to see the major current challenges resolved. While CO2 shortages meant significant production challenges towards the end of the review period and with high interest rates and high inflation squeezing margins to vanishing point, many of New Zealand’s leading independent breweries have struggled, particularly those that are more highly leveraged, meaning that they have less free cash flow as interest costs have increased, resulting in several smaller brewers going out of business.
The forecast period is expected to see non-alcoholic beer outperform beer overall as increasing numbers of local consumers look to the category is way of reducing their alcohol intake. Beer has been one of the categories at the forefront of the trend towards non-alcoholic beverages in New Zealand in recent years.
The rapid growth being seen in demand for RTDs is being fuelled largely by the reinvention of the category by local player Pal’s. Pal’s has focused on health and wellness aspects to promote its products, with health and wellness increasingly becoming a focal the marketing of point for alcoholic drinks in New Zealand.

Beer
An alcoholic drink usually brewed from malt, sugar, hops and water and fermented with yeast. Some beers are made by fermenting a cereal, especially barley, and therefore not flavoured by hops. Alcohol content for beer is varied – anything up to and over 14% ABV (alcohol by volume), although 3.5% to 5% is most common. Beer is the aggregation of lager, dark beer, stout and non/low alcohol beer.
