Efforts are being made to increase production of cocoa beans and also processing of cocoa beans into chocolate products in Cameroon. The National Cocoa and Coffee board aims to process 50% of local cocoa production and recently two new processors, namely Neo Industries and Atlantic Cocoa, were set up.
The forecast period is set to see strong demand for low-sugar alternatives to chocolate spreads as a result of rising health awareness and, in particular, the spreading concern about the negative health implications of consuming products that are high in sugar. This is set to drive demand for honey during the forecast period, with some consumers already moving away from sweet spreads completely due to concerns that they are at risk of developing diabetes and other preventable illnesses that are tied to high sugar consumption.
Cameroon is a significant producer of groundnut (nut butter) and while volume sales are predominantly unpackaged, there is increasing artisanal options available through supermarket channels.
