In early 2024, severe floods affected the south of Brazil, in the state of Rio Grande Do Sul, which is also one of the biggest wine producing regions in the country. According to local estimates by Emater/RS-Ascar, 500 hectares of agricultural land were directly impacted by the flooding, landslides, collapses, and erosion during the heavy rainfall.
The high price of wine, especially still red wine, aligned with the cultural Brazilian preference for a sweet taste, has made table wine a category that is relevant in terms of volumes, but has a poor reception amongst many consumers, due to the view that wines should hold a different flavour profile. This is slowly changing, and the professionalisation of local production has made the perceived quality of table wine increase exponentially, while consumers, in an effort to appreciate local production, have been eager to explore and accept such products.
Wine has always struggled in the on-trade in Brazil, with its high mark-up and competition from other alcoholic drinks. But, as Brazilian creativity takes hold, mixing international habits with local cultural movements has started proving successful, with wines making the transition to specialised butecos – small bars that traditionally focused on beer and appetisers.
