Imports of wine might continue to be disrupted by geopolitical issues that are disrupting the supply chain, such as attacks by militant groups on container ships passing through the Red Sea. This may affect the supply of wine imported from Chile (eg Montes, Casillero del Diablo, Frontera etc), the US (eg Carlo Rossi) and Italy, with any rerouting of shipping routes creating delays and added costs.
Caldbeck Macgregor (M) Sdn Bhd, Luen Heng Agency Sdn Bhd and Muihua Sdn Bhd are among the players which carry exclusive and non-exclusive brands and they are likely to focus on on-trade channels like wine bars and restaurants over the forecast period which able to order in bulk. Other smaller distributors like Asiaeuro Wines & Spirits Sdn Bhd and Tong Woh Group are also predicted to expand their distribution reach to wine bars, foodservice and retail shops (TWE Shop).
As tourism increases and locals develop a growing interest in wine it is expected that more on-trade outlets will open to cater to this demand, with opportunities for establishments to employ sommeliers to attract more serious enthusiasts. Areni Wine Bar opened in March 2024 and Mellow Wine Bar opened in January 2024, with these being two examples of new wine bars to open in Malaysia.
