Wine in Japan is expected to decrease in total volume terms over the coming years. One of the bars set high for drinking wine is the depth of the category, with so many kinds of wines, and the knowledge that seems to be necessary to enjoy it.
Sake, with an alcohol content of around 15%, has a higher alcohol content than beer or RTDs, which is one of the reasons why potential newcomers avoid it. There are currently few low alcohol or no alcohol sake products in the market, but the development of such products will be essential to attract a younger audience of legal drinking age.
The demand for non alcoholic and low alcohol wines increased rapidly due to the restrictions on the serving of alcoholic beverages in restaurants and bars in the COVID-19 pandemic, and due to increased health-consciousness. Even before the pandemic, many younger consumers of legal drinking age tended not to drink alcohol, but the spread of COVID-19 increased awareness of the need for healthier beverages.
