Irish wine consumption is expected to maintain a downward trend in volume terms, overall, over the forecast period – albeit with sales balancing out so declines are less steep. The general trend of declining alcohol consumption is a key factor affecting this forecast, alongside the variety of government interventions which will shape developments in the alcohol industry over the forecast period.
Despite falling volumes overall, there are still potential opportunities within wine. Two examples of note are premium wine (eg as seen with vermouth due to its novelty factor), and non-alcoholic wine.
Sustainability will continue to be a key focus for producers and consumers alike, and the demand for organic and sustainable wines is expected to grow. Indeed, the increased emphasis on sustainable characteristics and transparency in communication can provide a point of attraction for younger adults of legal drinking age, who are taking a growing interest in the production of the products they buy.
