The wine category is very mature in Portugal and is expected to witness a decline in volume sales over the upcoming period, whilst constant value sales will rise moderately. The growing pressure surrounding alcohol consumption in the EU is set to continue and represents a threat to future category development amid efforts to “protect” the category by Portugal and other southern European countries.
Domestic sparkling wine presents the best growth opportunity in Portugal over the forecast period, due to recent investments in its production, certification and high quality. There is growing consumer interest and knowledge around wine regions such as Bairrada and Tavora-Varosa.
Despite the recent growth in average wine prices, there is still room for prices to rise, since wine prices remain low when compared to other alcoholic beverages. Certified wine is expected to expand in the coming years, in both the off trade and the on trade, as other aspects such as sustainability and production methods gain importance, as well as knowledge and information around wine.
