From 1 January 2024, there was an increase in taxation on alcoholic drinks of between 5 and 10 cents per bottle for wine. This is on top of the regular price increase that is already expected to be added to cover the rising costs for producers, importers and retailers.
Over the forecast period, subcategories within wine that are struggling with maturity are unlikely to successfully attract new young consumers. Sherry, for instance, has received support from the European Union for years to run promotional campaigns to try to persuade younger consumers about the benefits of sherry wine.
The outlook for wine is not entirely negative. In the medium to long term, there is scope for modest year-on-year growth as non-grape, other sparkling, rosé, white, and non-alcoholic wines may record positive growth.
