Total volume sales of wine are set to fall further in Spain over the forecast period. The ongoing rise in consumer health awareness will be a key factor in the decline in consumption of wine in the country, with wine also suffering from growing competition from other products and persistent consumer concerns about the uncertain economic situation.
One of the most significant challenges for the wine industry is its ability to respond promptly to rapid changes in consumer preferences and tastes. The sector finds it hard to adapt to evolving consumer preferences, as vines are multi-year crops and they begin to produce approximately three years after planting.
Over the forecast period, Spain's wine industry is expected to undergo innovation and product development focusing on sustainability, technological advancement, and adaptation to changing consumer preferences. One notable initiative is the Denomination of Origin Ribera del Duero's three-year research project, launched in 2024, to identify and characterise new grape varieties from old vineyards.
