The market for wine in Finland will see a decline in volume sales over the forecast period, alongside a fall in in per-capita consumption. This will be largely due to a shift in attitudes towards alcohol consumption, particularly among younger adults, who are drinking less than previous generations.
Finns are increasingly interested in the provenance of the wine they consume and the production methods that are used to make it. In addition, wine drinkers, especially those in younger age groups, are more conscious of environmental issues and are more likely to support producers which embrace sustainable practices.
The wine industry is increasingly experimenting with environmentally-responsible packaging and this trend looks set to continue over the forecast period. Lightweight glass bottles, for example, are gaining traction, as not only do they protect the wine as well as a heavy bottle, but they also require fewer resources to manufacture According to the state-owned monopoly Alko, 45% of wines traded in glass bottles were sold in lightweight versions in 2023, up from 13% in 2018.
